The most direct way to train the side delt — the muscle that actually makes shoulders look wide.
How To
Stand tall with a light dumbbell in each hand, elbows very slightly bent.
Raise your arms out to the sides, leading with your elbows rather than your hands.
Stop level with your shoulders — higher than that hands the work to the traps.
Lower slowly over two to three seconds, resisting the whole way down.
Watch Out
If your torso swings, the side delt has already stopped being the prime mover.
Keep your shoulders down and away from your ears through the whole range.
The lowering phase is half the set — control it deliberately.
Coaching
Lean slightly against a bench to remove momentum entirely.
Pause for one second at the top of every rep.
This is a high-rep movement — 12 to 20 reps is the sweet spot.
Swap It Out
Same job, different equipment or difficulty. Any of these can replace the movement above.
